NCDOT presents plans for Castle Hayne Road improvements

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A new median and roundabout are some of the new options transportation officials are looking to bring to Castle Hayne Road.

The DOT wants to make improvements to the road from North 23rd street up to I-140. They are looking at clearing out the Castle Hayne Road intersection at 23rd Street to put in a roundabout.

DOT officials brought two road improvement options to a public meeting as they say the road is seeing increased congestion, rear end accidents as well as foot traffic.

“The good thing about a roundabout is it corrects the crash problem we’re seeing there,” said project team leader David Leonard. “They’re really good at reducing crashes at an intersection as well as moving traffic, also pedestrian friendly. So it really is a good treatment for that intersection. We certainly think it’s a good choice but we are open to feedback on that.”

One version would create a solid median with turn lanes along the road. Nearly resembling a super street, the median would stretch from I-40 up tho Wrightsboro continuing to I-140. Leonard says this project would cost upwards to $26 million.

The second option will be to simply widen Highway 133 providing an open middle turning lane along Castle Hayne Road. Both projects look to add bicycle lanes to Castle Hayne Road. This alternative would cost upwards to $24.7 million.

DOT says they will begin work on either project around 2021 with construction going through 2023.
