NCDOT seeks public input on possible funding solutions

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — The NCDOT is seeking public input on potential funding solutions as cars become more fuel-efficient and new technologies develop.

They’ve released a survey to gather opinions on how to address future transportation funding issues.

Amna Cameron with the NCDOT explains why they are trying to get ahead of this growing issue.

“Motor fuels consumption is declining, so there are many efforts to find solutions to prepare for the future when motor fuels taxes become simply insufficient, almost a dying tax, years in the future. So, we are looking at what those options are that relate to the transportation system,” Cameron said.

We went to a gas station to see if anyone had heard of this survey.

Door Dash driver Frank Scully was not aware of it and believes the situation is unfair.

“That is very unfair, I mean not everyone can afford electric vehicles and the roads should be taken care of already,” Scully said.

Craig Curtis, who drives both gas and electric vehicles, suggested another approach.

“I think there are other ways you can do it, I mean as far as for electric cars they should maybe increase the sales tax on electric cars when they are sold because they are not using gasoline,” Curtis said.

BP gas station district manager Sandra Bradshaw and store manager Jennifer Ruff also weighed in.

“I think it is unfair, if we as gas consumers, gas vehicles are charged any kind of tax other than what our tax should be. Then electric vehicles should be taxed just the same,” they said.

NCDOT encourages North Carolinians to take the survey.
