RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — With a second round of winter weather likely in North Carolina starting Friday, state officials are urging people to stay off the roads during the storm.

Impacts will start being felt on Friday with the potential for winter weather in the Cape Fear starting Saturday. It is better to prepare now by grabbing any supplies you may need.

“Our crews have been working around the clock this week clearing roads, and we’re now turning our attention back to preparations for more winter weather,” said State Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson. “We appreciated everyone doing their best to keep off the roads last weekend, and we need that same focus again with this storm.”

NCDOT cleared most roads from last weekend’s winter storm. Crews then started earlier this week restocking salt supplies in anticipation of this second winter storm.

On Wednesday, crews across the state started pre-treating roads with brine. As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, crews placed more than 970,000 gallons of brine in North Carolina to prevent the roads from freezing.

NCDOT has over 1,250 dump trucks that can be equipped with plows and spreaders to remove snow and ice, and 913 contracted trucks.

During the storm, road conditions could quickly deteriorate, and the bitter cold will refreeze anything that melts.
