Nearly 50 girls graduate leadership camp

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Forty-nine girls graduated from the summer leadership academy this afternoon at UNCW.

The camp exposed the girls to marine science and engineering. The girls who attended this camp will be recruited to be part of the first all-girl public charter school in North Carolina named The Girls Leadership Academy for Young Women. Principal Laura Hunter talked to us about how the camp impacted the girls.

“So we know that girls who become women are under represented in science fields,” Hunter said. “We know that science is all about problem solving and critical thinking. All of those are transferable skills into jobs that they will get when they get through college”

The charter school will be open in August 2016.
