Neighborhood ‘Turkey Bowl’ brings families together
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One Wilmington neighborhood celebrates Thanksgiving with some good old fashioned football each year.
The 5th Annual Turkey Bowl brought kids of all ages together for some fun on the gridiron before dinnertime. Organizers said it is all about having a good time, not about winning or losing.
Parents said it’s a great way to wear out their little ones for a more peaceful Thanksgiving feast.
“I’ve got four boys ages 13 to 7 and they’ve got a ton of friends and family and neighbors and they all come up here and we play football on Thanksgiving Day,” said Sean Desmond, a parent and organizer of the event.
“We tell all our friends to bring friends. We tell family to bring family. And whoever wants to play can play. It’s more about the fun than the competition,” added Desmond.
Lauren Maginnes is thankful for the Turkey Bowl. She said, “Because like at school, if the girls try to play football the boys won’t let them. So just having to be included.”
