New Bern preschool not allowing unvaccinated teachers to work
NEW BERN, N.C. (WCTI) — First Presbyterian Church in New Bern is receiving some backlash from parents after the school announced teachers at the church’s preschool, and other staff, would not be allowed to return to work unless fully vaccinated by July 16th, 2021.
“I was notified two weeks ago that if I was not fully vaccinated by July 16th, I would not have a job,” said one former teacher of 5 years, who asked to keep her name and face private.
According to Designated Associate Pastor, Reverend Doctor Maren Sonstegard-Spray, a letter was sent to all preschool teachers informing them of the new vaccine policy, which does not allow any staff to come back to work in the fall without the vaccine.
The letter reads, in part, “It is the policy of First Presbyterian Church, New Bern, NC (FPC), that no employee will be allowed to return to work after July 16, 2021 without being fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. If there are legitimate medical reasons verified by a physician, or sincerely held religious beliefs that preclude compliance with this policy, please notify the Personnel Committee. This policy is adopted to prevent significant risk to the health and safety of staff, the congregation, teachers and students who work at, and attend worship and preschool on the FPC campus. It requires the employee to sign a certification of vaccination that will be provided by FPC.”
