New Columbus County K-8 school to start construction within year

EAST COLUMBUS, NC (WWAY) — Back in February, Columbus County Schools was awarded a $52 million grant to help build a new K-8 school.

Now, the plans for the school are in the developmental design stage.

The final design of the school has not been finalized, with a recent presentation about the school showing a conceptual 2-story building.

The school will be built in the Bolton area and will be expected to serve more than 900 students.

Assistant Superintendent Adam Thompson said the district’s decision to build a new school in the eastern part of the county is exciting.

“First of all, we’re super excited about having a school and it’s location in Bolton,” Thompson said. “We feel it’s really going to be really great for our students on the east end and really great for the town of Bolton. It means a lot to our students to have a new state of the art, updated school to go to. The community is very excited and we’re excited as a district.”

Construction is expected to start within a year and will be completed before the start of the 2027 school year.
