New crosswalk signs helping to protect pedestrians in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Some improvements in one area of Leland should make it easier and safer for pedestrians.

The town has installed four rectangular rapid flashing beacons at two crosswalks along Town Hall Drive.

The project aims to enhance the visibility of pedestrians walking near the town’s public library, the Brunswick Center at Leland, Founders Park, and the town hall.

Once activated, the new signs will flash in rapid, alternating fashion, alerting drivers to pedestrians.

Town manager David Hollis said more of these flashing beacons could be installed in other areas across town.

“There’s the idea that these same crosswalks, same signs and crossings could be put in other areas of town,” Hollis said. “We’ve had some requests from different people and different communities wanting to upgrade the crosswalks that they have in their community and this is a way that we can do that.”

The project was funded by a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Demonstration grant and Toyota Motors.

Hollis said any new crossings would be part of next year’s budget.
