New data highlights Wilmington’s transportation challenges and future needs
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A national transportation research nonprofit that evaluates road and bridge conditions across the United States has released new data about Wilmington’s transportation infrastructure.
The study, conducted by National Transportation Research and titled “Keeping North Carolina Mobile,” assesses traffic patterns and infrastructure conditions statewide.
The findings reveal that in the Wilmington area alone, drivers waste approximately 28 hours annually due to traffic congestion.
Additionally, nearly 20% of local highways are reported to be in poor condition.
As the Cape Fear region’s population continues to grow, the study also projects future transportation needs.
Natalie English, President and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the importance of preparing for potential storms and natural disasters that could impact the area:
“Ensuring that infrastructure is sustainable and resilient through storm events is crucial. When Hurricane Florence came through, New Hanover County became isolated because roads were washed out or flooded to the extent that we couldn’t travel between New Hanover County and the mainland. We are encouraged by recent investments made by our state Department of Transportation in improving infrastructure in these critical corridors. We hope to avoid such challenges in the future.”
One of the significant investments English highlighted is the repair work done earlier this year on the aging Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
