NEW DETAILS: 911 call released from fatal Elizabethtown shooting

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office released the 911 call in the case of 45-year-old Charlotte Smith, who’s charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of her husband, 42-year-old Daine Smith.

According to the dispatch log obtained by WWAY, the call came in just after 9:23 p.m. last Tuesday from a neighbor who found Daine bleeding on the couple’s back porch on Woodhouse Drive.

Dispatcher: “Where was he shot at?”

Caller: “He’s been shot…he’s been shot in the head. Hurry!”

Dispatcher: “Do you know who did it? Are they still there?”

Caller: “His wife just left, and they’ve been having a fight”

Dispatcher: “You said it was his wife?”

Caller: “His wife’s car just left.”

According to the neighbor, Daine was shot in the head, but was still breathing. They said moments before, they saw Charlotte leaving in her car.

“She just pulled out. That’s why I came over here. I heard the shot, I ran out the door, and I saw her leaving,” the caller said.

Based on the length of the call, it took police just under 5 minutes to respond. According to the log, Charlotte also called 911 and told a dispatcher her husband raped her, held her down, and was abusing her.  The recording of that call was not provided to WWAY.

Daine died on the way to the hospital.

After Charlotte left the scene, she traveled to Montgomery County where she was arrested. She is charged with first degree murder and will have her second court appearance next week.
