New details on fatal crash involving four Whiteville High School athletes

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A community in mourning and solidarity after a crash Friday claimed the life of one high school student, injuring three others. All four of the students are athletes at Whiteville High School.

A moment of silence was held at the high school’s 2024 graduation on Saturday for the four teens. Superintendent Jonathan Williams said the ceremony is a mix of emotions.

“We had a great graduation, but there is a cloud of heaviness hanging over our hearts right now. For the Powell family especially,” Williams said.

According to a family member, the crash happened on Sunset Terrace just west of Whiteville near Legion Stadium. The four teens’ vehicle careened into a ditch and flipped several times until it landed a few hundred feet away. Whiteville High School Principal Ronna Gore said she was devastated to hear of the crash.

“I was absolutely stunned, heartbroken,” Gore recalled. “It was heart wrenching scene, but we are here for our community, we are here for the staff, and most importantly, we are here for our students.”

Whiteville City Schools confirmed that Kaiden Powell died the crash. Twin brother Kainen Powell is in critical condition. Williams said he visited Kainen at Columbus Regional.

“Kainen is doing fair,” Williams said. “I did have a chance to speak with him at the hospital and his family yesterday, and he was doing well under the circumstances. I have not spoken to the other families, Smith and the Lacewell family, but I look forward to speaking with them very soon.”

Josh Lacewell was airlifted to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington where the family confirmed he is being treated for serious injuries, but is in stable condition.

Kamari Smith’s family also confirmed he is in the hospital being treated for his injuries.

Gore and Williams feel now is the time for the community to come together for the families.

“We have rallied around their family, we’ve been to the hospital, that’s where I’m headed right now. We just want to make sure that we’re there for them and provide that support and any resources that they might need,” Gore said.

“We just hope for the very best and we’re praying for their recovery,” Williams added.
