New Fort Fisher Visitor Center opens to the public
FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — The new visitor center at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site opened Wednesday.
The 20,000 sq ft. visitor center is home to numerous artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the fort, which was used during the Civil War and World War II.
The new visitor center replaces the old one, which was built in 1965 and only made to accommodate 25,000 visitors a year.
Nowadays, more than one million people visit the fort each year.
Assistant Site Manager Chad Jefferds said the opening is long-awaited.
“I think it’s surreal. I think all of us have just been like ‘wow, we’re finally here.’ It’s been incredible,” Jefferds said.
The visitors center is free and open to the public. You can visit from 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday.
