New Hanover Board of Elections to be without board members for a month

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover Board of Elections will be without any of it’s members for about a month, due to a new state law.

Senate Bill 382 made a number of changes to election law in the state, including ending the terms of all 5 board members at the end of June.

But the new members aren’t sworn in until the end of July.

Board chair Derrick Miller said the gap seems to have been an oversight by the legislature.

“It is surprising to see that there’s no provision to fill that gap,” Miller said. “It seems like, as best as I can tell, it’s a fault in the law. It makes it seem like it was a bill written in unwise haste is what it seems like.”

Miller said the month-long gap should not affect any elections that are being held later this year within New Hanover County.
