New Hanover Co. Animal Services explains options for pets during hurricane

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In the case of hurricanes and evacuations, getting your pet to a safe location can be a big concern. New Hanover County Animal Services has multiple options for when a State of Emergency or evacuation is declared.

The Animal Services Unit Main Shelter will take all small domestic animals regardless of vaccination status when an evacuation is declared. The shelter is free for all residents of New Hanover County. This shelter can be used if you are evacuating and cannot take your pet with you. Animals must be reclaimed within three days of the State of Emergency being lifted.

A co-location shelter is also offered at Trask Middle School. Dogs and cats with current rabies vaccinations are accepted. Owners who bring their pets to this shelter must also stay at the shelter. Owners and animals are housed separately, but owners do have access to their pets to walk, feed, and interact with them. Animals have to be reclaimed when the emergency shelter closes.

Be sure to bring any special foods, medications, blankets, toys, etc. your pet may need for their stay. Anything that will help alleviate your pets stress during the evacuation.
