New Hanover Co. Fire Rescue conducts training burn exercise

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — The smoke you may have seen or smelled in Castle Hayne was not a cause for concern. It was simply part of a training exercise for New Hanover County Fire Rescue.

A house that was acquired by the county was set on fire and crews worked to put out the blaze.

Firefighters were able to observe the behavior of the fire through all stages of its growth. They were also able to practice how to attack the fire with hoses.

Captain Blake Turner says this exercise gave his fellow firefighters some valuable experience.

“Acquired structures is what firefighters go to every day and we don’t get the opportunity to do this that much,” Turner said. “They get to go inside, attack a fire in the most realistic conditions possible.”

Turner hopes the community sees New Hanover County firefighters are ready for any situation, thanks to training exercises like this one.
