New Hanover County 4H giving kids chance to take part in voting process

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Early voting is underway and one organization is giving young people who can’t vote the opportunity to participate.

The New Hanover County Cooperative Extension’s 4H initiative has created a voting booth for kids under the age of 18.

This is the first time 4H is doing this event in New Hanover County.

Kids can vote on a ballot similar to the real thing, featuring every single candidate for all federal, state, and local positions that are a part of this year’s election.

Alex Eaker is an assistant with the 4H program and said this allows kids to learn more than how to vote.

“Also, you’re teaching them your civic engagement and to be involved in the community,” Eaker said. “And you can take that even a step further of starting to educate youth about the different kinds of, different kinds of issues that are arising in the community.”

The booth will be open weekdays from 9 am to noon and from 1 pm to 5 pm through the end of Election Day on November 5th.
