New Hanover County Commissioners approve purchase of 2 Western Bank tracts of land
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County commissioners held their monthly meeting on Monday, where a major topic was discussed.
The commissioners discussed the possibility of purchasing two tracts of land, just north of the Battleship North Carolina, along the western bank of the Cape Fear River.
The 28 acres of land would be purchased for riverfront preservation.
One of the tracts of land is adjacent to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s office shooting range and training center, and would be used for their marine unit.
Commissioner Dane Scalise said this shows how committed the board of commissioners is to preserving land throughout the county.
“I’ll just offer as comment that we have heard the public tell us repeatedly how important preservation is in our community,” Scalise said. “This is another example of us doing it.”
The commissioners unanimously approved the purchase for $2.24 million.
This also brings the total amount of land purchased by the board in recent months for preservation to more than 100 acres.
