New Hanover County Commissioners holds second budget work session for fiscal year 24-25

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County commissioners continued to look over budget items for the fiscal year 2024-25.

Thursday’s work session was the second one the commissioners have had, with them looking at 5-year capital improvement plans currently budgeted by the county through fiscal year 2028-29.

Those plans cost at least $100,000 to complete, must last longer than 5 years and take at least 12 months to finish.

Several other topics were covered, including fire rescue and recycling and solid waste.

One of the other topics covered was stormwater services.

Commissioner Rob Zapple voiced support for helping get some more funding for future projects and needs.

“I think its wonderful,” Zapple said. “I would certainly support an increase that you’re discussing here. And I hope you will find a way to increase as we go along because you’re doing all the great work that we need to have done so we don’t get a repeat of what happened during Florence.”

The meeting closed by looking at the opioid settlement fund, following Tuesday’s Settlement Committee meeting where 5 new programs are under consideration to receive funding.
