New Hanover County Fire Rescue gives safety tips on frying turkeys
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Fire Rescue is giving you tips to stay safe while cooking your turkey this week.
On Tuesday, Firefighters demonstrating the right way to fry a turkey.
If you plan to fry your turkey you could go the traditional route, or opt to air fry, which the fire department says is safer.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average for such incidents.
Britney Melvin is the Community Risk Reduction Coordinator with New Hanover County Fire Rescue.
She says you need to check the amount of oil in your pot, and slowly drop the turkey into the oil to prevent it from bubbling over.
“We also want to pat it dry before dropping inside of the hot oil because anytime there’s water, ice, anything like that, it’s going to pop and we don’t want that splatter to cause a fire,” she said.
Melvin adds you should always fry turkeys outside away from any flammable material.
