NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Fire Rescue is taking part in the annual Fill the Boot campaign, raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

According to a news release, firefighters will be out in the community through Thursday, collecting donations at intersections and other locations. Donations support children and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.

Those who want to give but are unable to find firefighters in person can also donate online.

This year marks the MDA’s 76th anniversary, including 72 years of partnership with firefighters nationwide. Over the past seven decades, firefighters across the country have raised more than $710 million for MDA, helping fund more than $1 billion in research.

According to MDA, those efforts have contributed to major medical advances, including the development of more than 20 FDA-approved treatments for neuromuscular diseases since 2015.
