New Hanover County introduces language tech for board meetings
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County is using technology to make county meetings more accessible and transparent to all residents, regardless of the language they speak.
The technology, called Wordly, is an AI-powered language and transcription service implemented during Board of Commissioners meetings. It offers real-time transcription for those who are hard of hearing and provides translation in over 60 languages.
Wordly can be accessed through any smart device by scanning a QR code. For those without personal devices, the county will provide equipment to ensure everyone can participate.
Linda Thompson, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for New Hanover County, explained the significance of the service:
“Now we’re able to invite people into our chamber, let them be a part of the process, and hear in real time what the commissioners are doing and the decisions they’re making. They can certainly give input and hear it firsthand.”
This new tool is part of the county’s expanding Language Access Plan, introduced earlier this year. It represents an important step toward improving communication and inclusivity across New Hanover County.
