New Hanover County looks to sell back bite-prone K9
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County is moving forward with trying to get rid of a Sheriff’s Office K9 that has bitten at least two people.
At their meeting yesterday, commissioners approved as part of their consent agenda a request by the sheriff to declare K9 Funny surplus property and have the county’s finance director work to negotiate selling the dog to Police Service Dogs, Inc., of Florida. That’s the same company the county bought the dog from in 2011. Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said the county paid $15,000 for the female Malinois.
Commissioners had been scheduled to talk Monday about donating the K9 to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, but that discussion was tabled.
In March Funny bit a child that approached it. The dog has not been on duty since that incident, which Brewer said is not the only time Funny has bitten someone.
