New Hanover County offers free rain barrels to eligible residents
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — For nearly 20 years, the New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District (NHSWCD) has offered discounted rain barrels to help residents save water and protect the environment. This year, the program is expanding, giving some residents the chance to receive a free rain barrel.
Why Use a Rain Barrel?
Rain barrels reduce storm water runoff, which helps prevent flooding and water pollution. They also allow residents to collect rainwater for outdoor use, like watering plants or washing items. This can lead to lower water bills, as the rainwater is free.
Financial Assistance for Eligible Residents
While most people can purchase a discounted rain barrel, the county is offering free barrels for those who need extra help. To qualify, residents must complete an eligibility form online and have gutters or downspouts that can be modified for installation.
Director Dru Harrison encourages everyone to take part: “You might think one barrel won’t make a difference, but if you and your neighbors use them, it really does.”
