New Hanover County officials urge preparedness as tropical activity eyes Carolinas

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) — As officials continue to monitor the tropical activity in the Atlantic, New Hanover County officials held a news conference at its Emergency Operations Center on Friday to outline preparation plans and what residents need to do now.

County leaders said they are closely watching the potential for any threats associated with a tropical storm or hurricane.

Some models show the system making landfall in the Carolinas. Steven Still, the New Hanover County emergency management director. Still said they’re concerned about the potential weather impacts throughout the county.

“So of importance, this is the time to check your plan, refresh your emergency kits, medication, batteries, water and verify your communication contacts,” Still said.

Still emphasized the county is working with local partners to prepare.

“It’s important to note that New Hanover County is engaged we are continuously monitoring this storm we are coordinating with our municipalities our utility and state partners and shelters are being pre-identified with the red cross and county facilities are on stand by,” he said.

In Wrightsville Beach, the ocean rescue director Sam Proffitt says his team is on standby as this system develops and warns any beach goers to be aware of ocean conditions

“We are gonna see a lot of swell coming in we are going to have increased rip current activity so definitely probably not the best time, if you do come to the beach, to come into the ocean,” Proffitt said.

Meanwhile, the emergency operations center also said they will continue to provide updates through their official channels as the storm system develops.
