New Hanover County prepares for school year sickness

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The return to school can bring an increase in illnesses for students due to crowded classrooms, new germs, and weakened immune systems.

Classrooms and communal spaces provide an optimal environment for germs to grow and cause sickness.

With colder weather approaching, common childhood respiratory or stomach viruses tend to become more prevalent.

Jon Campbell is the New Hanover County health director.

He says parents need to be reminded about the proactive steps they could take to limit their child’s chances of getting sick.

“We also do recommend individuals if you’re not feeling well, you stay home if you’re not feeling well. If you are ill, seek medical care, wash your hands frequently, and overall, healthy and well lifestyle will go a long ways,” said Campbell.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

You should also clean frequently touched surfaces, such as countertops, handrails, and doorknobs regularly.
