New Hanover County schools discuss moving forward with AI
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow and there’s a debate over how often AI should be incorporated in school.
The New Hanover County board of education heard a presentation on AI today from Mary Alice Hudson and Josh Bailey of the GenAI Implementation team.
The presentation claimed 66% of leaders would not hire someone without AI skills. So, it is important for students to learn and develop these skills now.
Hudson and Bailey say teachers do not need to be experts when it comes to AI but need to have a general understanding of it.
The board raised a number of questions, with the general focus being how you handle potential plagiarism on written assignments.
Hudson and Bailey say, education. Especially properly training the students and staff about how AI can be used for plagiarism is key.
WWAY caught up with board member Stephanie Kraybill after the meeting to hear more about the pros and cons of AI in schools.
“After listening to like 3 different presentations and practicing with the technology, I think it is going to be a good thing. And if we do not allow our students to use it in school, they are going to use it at home just like everything else that they do” Kraybill said.
Kraybill adds that it is a tool that needs to be embraced as students can get more information quickly. Teachers can also use this to talk current events and change things on the fly.
