New Hanover County Schools expand safety measures

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Schools is working closely with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to expand the role of K-9 teams in high schools.
Since 2023, the NHSO School Resource Officer K-9 unit has been a valued presence on campuses, fostering positive connections with students and staff. The K-9 teams will now occasionally conduct random, unannounced searches to support the district’s efforts in maintaining a drug-free and weapon-free environment.
“Our schools should always be places where students feel safe and focused on learning,” said Dr. Chris Barnes, Interim Superintendent of New Hanover County Schools. “This initiative is another step in our commitment to providing a secure and supportive space for all.”
