New Hanover County Schools responds after reported altercation at Alderman Elementary

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Schools is addressing concerns after an incident at Alderman Elementary involving an adult and a student on Wednesday.

According to a message sent to families, some students may have witnessed a physical altercation on campus. The district said it is aware of the situation and took immediate steps to address concerns. Officials stated that the safety and well-being of students remain their highest priority and that the district is cooperating with law enforcement. No additional details were released, with the district citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Families were also encouraged to contact the school if their child needs support. Counselors are available to meet with students who may have been upset by the incident.

In a separate statement provided to WWAY, Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes said he is unable to comment on personnel matters but emphasized the district’s commitment to student safety.

“By law, I am not able to comment on personnel-related matters. However, I want to be very clear: we will always conduct thorough and comprehensive investigations into any allegations involving student safety,” the statement said. “I am fully committed to doing everything within my authority to ensure our schools remain safe, supportive learning environments for every student. We take every allegation seriously.”

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirms they are investigating the incident, but at last check, no arrests have been made.
