New Hanover County Schools to consider new AI policy amendment

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County School Board is set to consider A new artificial intelligence policy at their next meeting.

During a policy meeting on Tuesday, committee members approved an amendment to the district’s Technology in the Educational Program Policy to include a provision about generative AI.

The provision lays out a roadmap for training students and faculty on how to effectively use AI.

Vice Chair Melissa Mason said the policy will help educators to use AI as A tool in the classroom, rather than a barrier to learning.

“There are definitely some positives uses to it, and, as was mentioned, we already use it already for Google Maps and we use it for Google itself, there’s already AI in place, and so looking at where do we see it, how do we use it, and how can we use it to our benefit,” she explained.

The board will vote on the new policy amendment at its next meeting on September 3rd.
