NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon has announced he is switching his political affiliation from Democrat to Republican  and plans to seek re-election in 2026.

In a statement, McMahon said the decision came after “careful and prayerful consideration” and was made for personal reasons, saying that the move does not change his approach to leading the Sheriff’s Office.

“It has always been my desire to keep politics out of the Office of the Sheriff,” McMahon said. “This decision does not change my unwavering commitment to serve all residents of New Hanover County fairly, impartially, and with integrity.”

McMahon has served as sheriff for 16 years, first appointed in 2009 and later elected to multiple terms. He said his dedication to public safety and community trust remains unchanged.

“I have been dedicated to upholding the law, ensuring public safety, and leading the Sheriff’s Office in a way that puts community trust first,” he said. “That mission remains the same today as it was the day I took office.”

McMahon said he looks forward to continuing that work as he seeks another term in 2026.
