New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office asking for public’s help to solve homicide

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the unsolved murder of 31-year-old Don’Tae Nixon that happened earlier this month.

Members of Nixon’s family joined the Sheriff’s Office for a press conference held Wednesday morning, asking for information.

Nixon was shot and killed outside his home along Stoney Road in the Walnut Hills community of Castle Hayne on December 3rd.

Nixon’s cousin, Jimmy Hawkins, said Don’Tae was a friendly and loving person.

“He was a father, a son, a brother, a friend and a light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” Hawkins said. “His laughter was infectious, his kindness was boundless and his dreams were as big as his heart. He didn’t deserve this. No one deserves to have their life cut short in such a violent and unjust way.”

Sheriff Ed McMahon said they’re doing whatever it takes to bring the killer to justice.

“We’re going to let you know that the ATF is offering up to a $5000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of our suspect,” McMahon said.

Investigators also released a video they believe shows Nixon’s suspected killer walking down a street shortly after the shooting.

New Hanover County District Attorney Jason Smith said his office does not know if Nixon was targeted in the shooting.
