New middle school officially opens in Lake Waccamaw

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — A brand new middle school is officially open at Flemington Academy over in Lake Waccamaw.

Director of Education Tom Simmons said the school has been a public charter school for three years and in that time the old building became overcrowded. The school has about 100 students, about 60 of them will be attending the new middle school.

“We were in a very small, cramped facility last year. We were actually in bedrooms that we converted into classrooms. And it was just a crowded situation, you literally could not put another desk in the room,” said Simmons.

Simmons said he hopes this new building will provide students with even more one on one attention and help them find the three C’s that the school focuses on, connection, compassion, and character.
