New roundabout to be built in Leland Town Center

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — One of the busiest intersections in the town of Leland will soon be redesigned to help ease traffic congestion.

Work will soon start at the intersection of Ocean Gate Plaza and New Pointe Blvd near the 7/11 convenience store in Leland Town Center.

The intersection will be changed to a single-lane roundabout.

During construction, drivers will be able to use portions of the intersection.

Leland council member Bill McHugh said the project will, hopefully, make the intersection a bit easier for drivers.

“That intersection can get a little bit dicey, particularly as the area grows and the commercial development back there grows,” McHugh said. “It’s nearly impossible now to safely make a left turn out of it so not only will it be an improvement for the roads, it will be an aesthetic improvement and it’ll make the community safer and allow for more free-flowing traffic.”

McHugh said construction is expected to begin sometime this spring and should be completed during the summer.
