New Veterans Memorial Garden in Wilmington dedicated

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s new Veterans Memorial Garden in Wilmington was officially dedicated on Thursday, Nov. 9, just in time for Veterans Day.

About 200 guests were invited for the ceremony for the Garden, which took two years to complete. Among those in attendance were a representative from Senator Thom Tillis’ office, New Hanover County Commissioners Bill Rivenbark and Rob Zapple, and Judge Robin Robinson.

“American veterans, American service members are at the fabric, the core of the fabric of who we are,” said former Coast Guard Commandant Karl Schultz, who attended today’s ceremony. “So to see a couple hundred people come out today and get excited about the care facility wrapping their arms around the veterans community, well: that’s just Americanism from my perspective.”

The eagle sculpture at the center of the Garden was created by US Army veteran Dumay Gorham III. The sculpture has an approximate 11-foot wingspan.

Pathways, constructed with pavers and bricks etched with the names of US veterans, invite visitors to stroll the intertwined paths and reflect on the one the lives of those who put their lives on the line to defend America.

The center poles fly the United States, North Carolina and New Hanover County flags.

Pavers and bricks, etched with the names of loved ones who have served our country, make up the garden paths.

Throughout the garden is a variety of vegetation, many of which blooms red, white, or blue.

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare is located at 1414 Physician’s Drive. LCFL has a similar garden in Bolivia.
