New Year, new books: Librarian tips for achieving reading goals
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As the new year begins, many people set resolutions to read more books. But for some, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start. To help, we visited the New Hanover County Public Library to talk to Susan DeMarco, the Children’s Services Supervisor, about resources that can help make reading a part of your routine in 2024.
DeMarco recommends two great programs: Beanstack and Libby.
Libby gives library cardholders access to the library’s collection of digital books. With Libby, you can check out up to six books at a time, making it easy to enjoy a good read no matter where you are.
For those who want to track their progress, Beanstack is a helpful tool that lets you monitor your reading journey. It shows milestones along the way, keeping you motivated to hit your reading goals.
Another tip DeMarco shares is the use of audiobooks. She says audiobooks are a great way to make reading part of your everyday life, rather than a dedicated ritual. You can listen while cooking, driving, or doing household chores, making it easier to fit reading into your busy schedule.
DeMarco also believes that setting aside dedicated reading time, especially for younger children, can make a big difference in their reading habits. “I recommend making it a routine, so setting aside ten or 15 minutes is better than nothing,” DeMarco says. “If you can get into the habit of reading for 15 or 20 minutes a day, once you’ve done it several times, it becomes a habit, and then it becomes something you look forward to. You don’t question it.”
If you’re unsure where to begin, don’t worry. DeMarco adds that all New Hanover County residents have access to a free library card, and library staff are always happy to help new readers find their first book.
