WWAY’s 5th Quarter – October 24

videoOnly two weeks remain in the 2014 high school football regular season. On Friday's 5th Quarter we showcased several games from around the region. This included the showdown between undefeated Wallace-Rose Hill vs. East Bladen, undefeated Hoggard vs. Laney, New Hanover vs. West Brunswick, Whiteville vs. Fairmont and more. Check it out!

Four local teams advance in volleyball state playoffs; New Hanover wins league soccer title

videoHoggard, Pender, South Columbus and Wilmington Christian all won state playoff volleyball games on Thursday night. Odds are we'll have at least one state champion from the area this year. On Thursday New Hanover won the boys soccer crown for the Mideastern Conference. We were there for that too. Plus, the Landfall Tradition tees off on Friday. Prior to the event we caught up with UNCW Seahawk golfer Kayla Thompson. The UNCW freshman is a graduate of West Bladen High.

Volleyball playoffs continue; high school soccer regular season winds down

videoOn Wednesday New Hanover shutout Hoggard in boys soccer. We were there to see some of the action. The Wildcats will earn a league title if they can win on Thursday against Ashley. Four area volleyball teams will continue their state playoff journey on Thursday. In fact the Wilmington Christian squad has a shot at securing a state volleyball title this weekend in Greensboro.

Pender volleyball senior now 6th in nation in blocks; Tuesday sports from New Hanover, Laney & Hogggard too

videoPender High senior Briana Pittman moved into 6th place nationally for career blocks in high school volleyball. Pittman now has 622 career blocks. We were in Burgaw on Tuesday when Pender's state playoff game was halted in order to recognize Pittman's achievement. We also had sports coverage from New Hanover, Hoggard and Laney on Tuesday.

UNC academic report set for release; Joe Miller & Jack Holley recognized in Chapel Hill

videoA report on academic misconduct in regard to athletics at the University of North Carolina will be released on Wednesday. Freddie Jackson stole the show at UNCW's Midnite Madness. We showed his creative slam dunk on our sports on Monday night. Plus we showcased NCHSAA Hall of Fame Day from Chapel Hill where the late Joe Miller and Jack Holley were honored.

Ethan Farmer says UNC defense is getting better; Tuesday high school soccer and more!

videoFormer South Columbus Stallion football standout Ethan Farmer says the UNC Tar Heel defense is getting better. Farmer and the Tar Heels host Georgia Tech on Saturday. On Tuesday on WWAY we featured the latest AP high school football poll, volleyball from Cape Fear Community College along with Coastal Christian's soccer win over Cape Fear Academy. Plus we provided a basketball preview of the upcoming Big Shots basketball showcase at Laney High.

Laney edges Hoggard in boys soccer

videoLaney played a man up against Hoggard on Tuesday for the majority of the Mideastern Conference soccer game. The Bucs eventually found the back of the net midway through the second half to beat Hoggard 1-0. Hoggard was able to beat Laney in volleyball though. We were in Buctown for both events.

4th tie this season for East Bladen soccer; AP high school football poll is out

videoWe had high school soccer action from Bladen County on Tuesday night on WWAY between East Bladen and North Brunswick. The Eagles have only played six times this season. Four of the games ended in a deadlock. A handful of area football teams are ranked in the first AP high school football poll this season. Plus more!
