NHC sheriff’s office investigates compromised school e-mails

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– Someone hacked private emails at a New Hanover County School.

The sheriff’s office is investigating compromised emails at Isaac Bear Early College High School. A spokesperson says it first happened back in December and then again within the last week.

Members of the school and WWAY received an e-mail from a person saying they are a part the Isaac Bear Anti-Cheat Activisits. The person says they hacked student’s e-mails to address the school’s massive cheating problem.

First the person says they hacked the e-mails in December to make the principal aware of the cheating. New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jerry Brewer told us they are still investigating those e-mails from December. He says they also had pornography links in them.

Then just this past week there were more compromised e-mail accounts threatening the principal. The hacker said, if the principal didn’t tell them why nothing was done about the cheating, the hacker would send the e-mail to everyone on staff and in the tenth grade.

Parent Cynthia Ward says she found out from the school before her tenth grader got the hacker’s e-mail.

“You know it’s the new age,” Ward said. “I’m certainly concerned, but happy that the word got out really quick. They got the word out and that’s all they could have done. I couldn’t think of anything else they could have done.”

The principal did not want to comment at this time, because the situation is still under investigation.
Brewer says the sheriff’s office is looking for the suspect and that person will be charged.
