NHCS Board to discuss possible changes to student lottery system

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Board fo Education is reexamining how students are assigned to schools.

The current lottery system factors in zip code, income, and parental education level to place students in schools like Isaac Bear and Codington Elementary.

At Tuesday’s policy meeting, board member David Perry suggested placements should be based on test scores instead.

But member Josie Barnhart defended the lottery, saying it gives at-risk students a fair shot at the same opportunities.

The board voted to continue the discussion at its next meeting.
