No early voting at previous locations in Leland
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — People who live in northern Brunswick County may have to drive farther if they want to vote early.
Don’t make plans to cast your ballot at the Leland Cultural Arts Center or Leland Town Hall during one-stop early voting this year. Both locations were used in the past, but now the Town of Leland is closing a door on it.
“It was just a tremendous impact on us and we said that we couldn’t allow that to happen any longer for it to impact us in that way,” Town Manager David Hollis said.
Hollis said early voting put a strain on resources at both locations. The Board of Elections fears Leland’s decision may now put a strain on voters.
“If we don’t find an early voting location, the nearest one to them would theoretically be here in Bolivia at our office. That’s kind of a haul. I mean, we do offer absentee by mail so voters don’t want to wait until election day. They can always do absentee by mail, but a lot of people like to go in person,” Brunswick County Board of Elections Director Sara Knotts said.
The Town of Leland suggested the Senior Center, which is less than a block from town hall, could be used as a polling place.
“But they said they don’t like it. For whatever reason they don’t like it,” Hollis said.
“We need to be able to offer early voting in Leland. Our concern is just that we are going to be at a facility that’s not adequate to support the flow of traffic that it would bring in,” Knotts said.
The Board of Elections will meet next week to make a decision about voting in Leland. The special meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the Commissioners’ Chambers. The address is 30 Government Center Drive NE, Bolivia.
