North Brunswick HS student wins state-wide congressional art competition

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A student at North Brunswick High School has been selected as the winner of a congressional art competition, beating out every other student in the state.

Liliana Arroyl won the award for North Carolina in a national art competition held by the US House of Representatives.

On Thursday, a staffer with Rep. David Rouzer’s office presented the award to Arroyl in class.

Arroyl will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC for the national awards ceremony, and to see her piece hung in the US Capital.

Five other students from the same class were also chosen as finalists for District 7.

Arroyl says she’s honored and hopes to use her talent after high school.

“I was so shocked because my other classmates did so good, and I just did one,” she said. “I’ve been, like, really debating what I should get into for my career so this was a major wake up call.”

Since its inception in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition has showcased art from more than 650,000 students from across the country.
