North Carolina Medicaid expansion opens enrollment for eligible residents next week

ASHEVLLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Starting next week, more North Carolinians can get health coverage through Medicaid.
On Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, half of those who qualify for North Carolina’s Medicaid expansion will automatically be enrolled.
If you have yet to receive paperwork in the mail but believe you qualify, you’ll need to go to the state’s website to register next week. You can go there now to find eligibility criteria.
“If you go there, again, Medicaide.NCDHHS.gov, you’ll be able to learn about the criteria, about the program, so you can be aware of what you need to do to apply,” NCDHHS Secretary Kody Kinsley recently told News 13.
The state is working with non-profits and ambassadors to contact individuals statewide to provide information on eligibility and enrollment.
“For instance, a family of three or four that is making $40,000 a year is going to be eligible now in a way that they weren’t before,” explained Secretary Kinsley.
The expansion offers full health insurance benefits for those who qualify between the ages of 19 and 64, including prescription coverage and preventative care.
