North Carolina homeowner charged in fatal shooting

SANFORD, N.C. (AP) – A North Carolina woman has been charged with murder a day after she told authorities she shot a man who was trying to get into her home.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office told local media outlets that 48-year-old Rhonda Kaye Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death on Thursday of 29-year-old Bryant Latrelle Martin.

Williams told investigators that she grabbed her pistol after hearing someone jiggling the front door to her home.

She said the man tried to force his way inside, and they struggled.

She said she fired several shots as Martin ran from the porch.

Investigators said Williams’ account of the incident didn’t match evidence found at the scene.

Williams is jailed without bond. Online records didn’t indicate whether she has an attorney.
