Not just basketball on Monday between Pender & Cape Fear Academy

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Pender High School hosted Cape Fear Academy on Monday. Cape Fear girls head basketball coach Ray Beatty is a 1978 Pender graduate. He’s partly responsible for organizing the Vichon Fuller tribute on Monday. Fuller was Beatty’s best friend growing up. Fuller was killed in a car accident the night before the Pender graduation ceremony in 1979.

This marked the first time Beatty has coached against his old school. “I have been coaching a long time. This is one of the biggest events that I have been involved with.” Ray Beatty told WWAY. “To come back and to especially honor a dear friend of mind, Vichon Fuller who passed away before he graduated, means a lot to come back and do that and to have a scholarship fund for him is special. I graduated in 1978.  Vichon and I grew up together and he’s definitely one of the best player to ever wear the Patriot basketball jersey.”
