“Not surprised:” Political party leaders react to NHCO sheriff affiliation switch

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY-TV) — Sheriff Ed McMahon seems at peace but a recent decision of his lit a political fire in New Hanover County.

“My primary focus as sheriff will continue to be to keep this community as safe as possible,” McMahon said.

McMahon has served the area for 16 years and on Thursday he announced he’s running for re-election come 2026.

“Nothing’s changing,” McMahon said.

He was first appointed in 2009 and later elected to multiple terms. McMahon confirmed he was a Republican before switching to the Democratic Party a month before replacing Sid Causey upon his retirement in 2009.

“That was 16, 17 years ago,” McMahon said.

The reason for the current switch to the GOP?

“It is a deeply personal and family decision that I’ve made,” McMahon said.

John Hinnant of New Hanover County Republicans says McMahon is highly regarded by both political parties.

“We look forward to talking with him more about his political philosophy and leanings but as a sheriff goes he’s a great man and we’re proud to have him,” McMahon said.

Jill Hopman of New Hanover County Democrats said in a statement:

The New Hanover County Democratic Party is not surprised by Sheriff McMahon’s decision and has always been warned that it could happen. Do I wish that he had given us the basic courtesy of a conversation or notice? Sure. But like with the judiciary, I do not believe that law enforcement should be partisan. And I hope that Sheriff McMahon continues to uphold the law in the same neutral manner despite his new political affiliation.

UNCW political science professor Aaron King said McMahon’s decision is something that voters should keep in mind as they head to the polls next year.

“It’s notable that there’s been other politicians that have done the same thing, we know that at the state legislative level there are pretty significant consequences, “ King said. “It’s certainly something that voters should consider.”

Hinnant said their executive committee will host a formal welcoming for McMahon come December.
