Notable North Carolina leaders support session limits

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new bipartisan group of political and corporate notables is promoting legislation limiting how much time the North Carolina General Assembly meets each year.

The North Carolina Committee to Preserve a Citizen Legislature has been formed in part in response to this year’s 8½-month session that ended Sept. 30. The General Assembly has traditionally tried to adjourn in July.

Rep. Gary Pendleton of Raleigh is a committee member. He said he would propose next spring a constitutional amendment that would limit sessions in odd-numbered years to 90 days and even-numbered years to 45 days.

Other committee members include former Chief Justice Burley Mitchell, ex-State Board of Education Chairman Phil Kirk, former Attorney General Rufus Edmisten and businessmen Temple Sloan Jr. and Bob Luddy.
