WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Novant Health has filed a certificate of need application with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to develop a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Wilmington, state health officials announced.

The proposal seeks to relocate 60 inpatient rehabilitation beds from Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center to establish Novant Health New Hanover Rehabilitation Hospital. The project is estimated to cost $92 million and is expected to be completed by December 2027, according to NCDHHS.

Novant says the Novant Health New Hanover Rehabilitation Hospital has served the community since 1994. They’re proposing a new, modern facility with 60 private rooms on the 15-acre parcel at 5301 Wrightsville Avenue, which also houses the Novant Health New Hanover Orthopedic Hospital.

“We look forward to sharing more about how our plans can support positive patient outcomes in our community,” Novant Health said in a statement.

A public hearing on the project is scheduled for April 16 at noon in Building L, room L107 at Cape Fear Community College.

Anyone may submit written comments on the proposal, but they must be received by the Healthcare Planning and Certificate of Need Section by 5 p.m. on March 31.

Submissions can be emailed as an attachment to DHSR.CON.Comments@dhhs.nc.gov or mailed to:
