Novant Health UNC Children’s adds pediatric neurology specialists
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As part of our coverage of healthcare innovations in the region, we focus on the expansion of pediatric neurology services at Novant Health UNC Children’s. Dr. Sonia Varghese, a pediatric neurologist, shared her insights during a recent interview leading up to the WWAY Health Fair at Independence Mall.
Dr. Varghese highlighted the prevalent conditions in their clinic, stating that they commonly address headaches, seizures, and developmental delays. Regarding headaches, she advised parents to observe signs like “change in behavior” and “sleeping more than usual,” particularly for children ages six and under.
Discussing seizures, Dr. Varghese acknowledged their diverse presentations, stating that “it can actually present in several different ways.” She urged parents to observe their children’s behavior, especially in school, noting, “Are they having any regression in their grades? Does the teacher notice that they’re just staring off in class?”
Regarding developmental delays, Dr. Varghese emphasized collaboration with pediatricians, saying, “It’s, you know, if they’re not walking by a certain age, don’t get worried. Just talk to your pediatrician.” She highlighted the significance of early intervention and the availability of genetic testing even for very young children to aid prognosis and treatment planning.
Addressing the common concern of sleep, Dr. Varghese recommended at least 10 hours for school-aged children. She acknowledged the challenges of maintaining consistent sleep patterns and suggested focusing on bedtime routines and reducing screen time before sleep.
Dr. Varghese’s insights provide parents with guidance on recognizing potential neurological issues and taking proactive measures. You can find out more information here.
