NTSB releases new details on plane crash


PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The NTSB says a plane that in Pender County over the weekend appears to have been in good condition before the accident happened. They made the announcement at a news conference today.

They said the plane had just undergone inspection.  The pilot, 89 year old Dillard Powell, died in the crash. The NTSB gave details Tuesday about the kind of place where the aircraft went down.

“It’s mostly pines and it’s in a lot of peat. It’s a very soft, soily area, and so consequently when the aircraft,” said Todd Gunther, an air safety investigator with the NTSB.

The plane was flying from Topsail Airfield to Albert Ellis Airport in Jacksonville. It was supposed to arrive 6:30 Sunday evening and when it didn’t the man’s wife alerted authorities.
