Nuclear siren test scheduled for July 1 near Brunswick Nuclear Plant

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Residents living near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant may hear outdoor warning sirens during a scheduled quarterly test on Wednesday, July 1.
Duke Energy, in coordination with emergency management officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, will conduct the test between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to ensure the warning system is operating properly.
The outdoor warning sirens, located within a 10-mile radius of the plant, will sound for between five and 30 seconds during the testing period. Officials say no action is required from the public if the sirens are heard during the scheduled test.
Duke Energy maintains 38 outdoor warning sirens around the Brunswick Nuclear Plant as part of its emergency preparedness program. The sirens are designed to alert residents to tune in to local radio and television stations for information in the event of an actual emergency.
The quarterly testing program is conducted in partnership with Brunswick and New Hanover county emergency management agencies, which are responsible for activating the sirens.
Additional information about outdoor warning sirens and nuclear emergency preparedness is available through Duke Energy’s nuclear emergency preparedness resources.
