OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The town of Oak Island has finished a handicapped beach parking project.

Last week the town officially opened the Cabana drop-off and handicapped parking lot, directly beside the Oak Island Cabana on East Beach Drive.

To the west of the Cabana, a new driveway with a roundabout ‘drop off’ is available for beachside unloading of passengers and equipment.

On the east side, a brand new handicapped-only parking lot has been paved with six new spaces to accommodate beachside parking and unloading without having to cross East Beach Drive.

Both sides feature wider, smoother access paths over the dunes, with mobi-mats installed.

Town council member Bill Craft said it’s great seeing the town work to give so many people the opportunity to enjoy the beach.

“We understand what people’s plights are,” Craft said. “So many people live their entire life hoping they get to come to the beach someday and retire. Once they do get to the beach, their body may turn on them and they have difficulty getting to the beach. If we can help in a small way, I’m very proud that the town is very conscious of that in trying to do that.”

These new additions were paid for using the same grant which funded the Cabana renovation last year.
